Why Doulas and birth partners matter?

My courses are unique in the fact I place as much focus on the dads role as the mothers in labour. Initially some dads are surprised at what a huge part they have to play in the labour environment but are soon very grateful for the long list of skills they gain to support their partners affectively.

When I was born in the 70’s it was almost unheard of for dads to attend births, having attended many births as a doula myself it seems a great injustice for any dad to not witness the miracle of their child coming into the world. Having said that every dad has a different level to which they want to be involved. I have some clients that want to be in the birth pool with mum and be very hands on and others that offer wonderful support through simple nurturing. There’s no right or wrong and I am confident that every dad leaves my course equipped with everything they need to be an amazing birth partner.

Some of my clients feel that they would also benefit from my support in labour and hire me to be their doula. This is not only a privilege but an experience that binds us with mutual love and respect for a lifetime. There is conclusive evidence that proves continued emotional support from a trained doula reduces labour time, reduces intervention rates and drugs and produces better apgar scores for babies. My role is vast but primarily I hold space for that couple to have the most positive birth possible on the day.
